President’s McValentine’s Teddybear Extravaganza

February 18th, 2008

Ok, we admit it, we’re super lame. Two + months and we haven’t posted anything at all. And we really haven’t put any effort into this one. Dan did come up with an elaborate scheme about Valentine’s Day originating with people plucking hearts out on spears and handing them to your loved ones, but that was kind of gross and I don’t really feel like locating the email he sent it in. We could have drawn some more presidents sketches for Presidents’ Day. We even could have cut out the presidents from the Turkey Day post and glued them into a different setting. But we didn’t. Instead, here is a super creepy sketch drawn by Dan which features Carorinu hugging a giant teddybear. It has already given me nightmares in true animé fashion. Oh, and I’ve included my take on some Balinese mythological creature to celebrate a trip I will be taking next month to SE Asia. Carorinu will come back soon, we promise, we just need a little freakin’ inspiration. And maybe some time.

Carorinu vol. 1, the rest

November 27th, 2007

The adventure continues….

p.s. Sudoku can cook and do things that my character is too lazy or “blonde” to do. So far, page 4 is my favorite as it is very silly.

Carorinu vol. 1, page 1

November 25th, 2007

And now, the first page of Carorinu. The main characters so far, are me, Dan (the shirtless one), his dog Sudoku, and our friend Sebastian. Sebastian is portrayed as a space pirate, who my character thinks is imaginary, but is in fact very real. On the cover is a small cat, who is based on Dan’s family’s cat, Sherman.

A couple things to understand about me in real life, which are key concepts in the comic (and should be applied to the cover as well):

I do not understand why I have such small hands.

I am very easily startled.

I have small boobs.

So enjoy. I will be posting more pages soon.

The Turkey, Mystery Bird of Imperialism

November 23rd, 2007

Turkeys are awesome. They taste better than chicken, go really well with cranberry sauce, and make very ridiculous noises when you taunt them. However, they do not originate from Turkey. In fact, I stumbled across this website the other day: http://www.linguistlist.org/issues/7/7-174.html and discovered that the Turkish word for turkey is “Hindi,” which comes from the Turkish word for India. According to this website, the word for turkey in Arabic, Hebrew, Polish, Russian, French, Yiddish, and Dutch, derives from each respective languages’ word for India. Interestingly enough, the Malay word for turkey translates to Dutch Chicken. So thank you to Alain Theriault from the University of Montreal for providing the world of Google with some insight as to how mysterious a past this delectable bird has. Apparently, the turkey was named after a guinea fowl found in England, called the turkey cock. Perhaps our American ancestors chose to call it the turkey because “Indian” was already mis-applied elsewhere, so they chose to name it after what they deemed to be a similar country. Also likely, the turkey could have been called of India in other places because America was accidentally known as India for a while.

From what I’ve gathered, the turkey was originally found in the Americas, and then exported to East Asia, and then exported all over Europe and Western Asia. From there, the turkey traveled down through Indonesia and into Malaysia. I could be completely wrong, but why else would Malaysians call it a Dutch Chicken, when the Dutch called it Bird from India? Those Dutch did spend an awful lot of time in that part of the world back then. They weren’t always a bunch of pot smoking hippies you know. (How did such small countries, such as the Netherlands, Portugal, and England take over such large portions of the world?) If only I could Google World the path that the turkey might have once taken.

On a different note, the Japanese word for turkey is “shicimencho,” which means seven faced bird. What? How does that even make any sense?

To honor the turkey this year, Dan has drawn a few pictures. The first is his interpretation of a seven faced turkey. The other two go together-the turkey decides, as part of its battle with imperialism, to attack NYC during the Macy’s Day Parade. In the second, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln ride in on Santa’s sleigh to prevent the nation from turning into gobbledy gook. I’d imagine they were successful as the Macy’s Day Parade still happens every year. No wonder the president pardons a turkey every year.

The World of Me

November 20th, 2007

As this is my website, I get to do whatever I want with it. There are no Google Ads, which focus on your likes and needs, so please make no mistakes, this website is about me.

From time to time I will upload pieces of a faux animé, created by Dan. Its name is “Carorinu,” which inspired the domain name for this website (that and caroline.com was already taken). If you don’t know us, you probably won’t get it. If you do know us, you can expect to make an appearance on here as a pencil drawn caricature of yourself, in space, in three thousand AND nine.*

*I don’t care what you math people say (especially you Dan), there is totally an “AND” in number pronunciation.

In the future you can expect to hear more silly things, such as my scientific ventures into the world of gastrophysics. Dan also has a very silly t-shirt idea, which I cannot reveal at this moment.

And now I will leave you with the cover (a small taste) of Carorinu. The Katakana isn’t quite perfect yet, as I am the one in Japanese class and I have only just begun learning Katakana. carorinu-cover2.jpg
